University rises 14 places in rankings high
A North East university has strengthened its position in national league tables.
The University of Sunderland has climbed 14 places in the Complete University Guide 2027, moving from 83rd to 69th in the UK rankings.
Its rise is the largest recorded by any North East university this year and builds on several years of upward momentum.
League table positions are determined using a range of indicators, including student satisfaction, teaching quality, research and graduate outcomes.
Several subject areas also recorded significant gains.
Childhood and youth studies rose 13 places to rank second in the UK, while social work climbed 23 places to ninth.
Sunderland is also ranked seventh nationally for counselling, psychotherapy and occupational therapy.
The latest success follows the University achieving Five-Star Overall status in the QS Stars rankings.
Five-star ratings were awarded across a range of categories, including teaching, employability, facilities, global engagement, environmental impact and diversity, equity and inclusion.
Officials say investment in facilities, academic programmes and student support remains a priority as they seek to equip graduates with skills valued by employers in a rapidly changing world.
Sir David Bell, vice-chancellor and chief executive of Sunderland University, said: “While league tables only provide a snapshot of the University’s activities, we are pleased that our position in the Complete University Guide 2027 reflects our continuing progress as an institution.
“Moving up 14 places is evidence of the University's ability to grow and strengthen, locally, nationally and internationally, even during these turbulent times for the higher education sector.”
