Northumbrian Water appoints new Head of Metering

As its roll out of smart meters expands across the North East, Northumbrian Water has appointed Dominic Butcher as its new Head of Metering. 

Dominic, from Middlesbrough, joined the North East water company two years ago as a Strategy and Operations Manager in metering. Before that, he spent 17 years at BT, leading large-scale transformation projects. 

In his new role, he will lead the entire metering operation across the company, from reading and repairing meters, to installing new ones, and keeping everything meter-related running smoothly. 

The appointment comes as part of Northumbrian Water’s £175m rollout of a smart water meter network, replacing older meters with smart technology. 

In the next five years alone, the team plans to install 720,000 meters, aimed at improving water efficiency, reducing leakage and building a more resilient network for the future. 

The new smart meters provide automatic hourly readings, giving customers a more accurate view of how much water they’re using day-to-day. This helps them to spot unusual usage early, such as potential leaks, and take action to save water and money on bills. 

Dominic said: “The rollout of smart meters is a significant investment in our network, helping us to improve the way we measure and manage water.  

“Meter reads are taken every hour automatically, so we can give customers clearer insight into their usage, supporting households and businesses to use water more efficiently. 

“It also plays an important role in protecting water resources for the future and helping us to deliver a more sustainable supply of water.”
