Plans for 350-home Tudhoe scheme approved
A County Durham property developer has secured planning backing for a major housing scheme that could deliver hundreds of new homes and affordable housing provision south of Durham City.
Banks Property has won support from Durham County Council’s planning committee for its proposed residential development on a 15-hectare site off York Hill Road in Tudhoe.
The scheme, which was recommended for approval by the council’s planning officers, includes plans for up to 350 homes, with 15 per cent designated as affordable housing. A small convenience store also forms part of the proposals.
The development will feature a mix of modern, energy-efficient homes, including bungalows, designed to meet a range of housing needs.
Environmental considerations are also central to the scheme, with Banks Property committing to delivering a biodiversity net gain of at least ten per cent through a dedicated ecological strategy.

The County Durham-headquartered developer said the project will also create opportunities for local suppliers and contractors during construction.
Kate Culverhouse, community relations manager at The Banks Group, said: “Having had a recommendation for approval for our Tudhoe planning application from Durham County Council’s expert planning officers, we are very pleased that the members of the Council’s planning committee have been minded to follow their guidance.
“This development will include a range of modern, energy efficient and sustainable house types, including bungalows, and will benefit from excellent access to the surrounding transport network, making both Durham City and Spennymoor easily accessible.
“We were very encouraged by the positive responses we had from many of the visitors to our Tudhoe community consultation events last year and excited by the opportunity we will now have to increase our long-term investment in our home county.
“We will now move forward with delivering on our plans and will ensure to keep local communities informed about the progress we make in the coming months.”
Subject to final approvals, Banks expects work on site to begin next year, adding to the pipeline of new housing developments across the region.
