Redcar set for family-friendly triathlon
A free community sports event is set to make a splash on the Redcar seafront this summer, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get active.
British Triathlon has partnered with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and local organisations to launch a new Swim Bike Run event at Majuba Beach on Sunday, June 28.
Running from midday to 4pm, the event will feature family-friendly activities for people of all ages and abilities, with the Swim Bike Run Mini starting at 1pm.
Participants can choose to swim, cycle, walk or run, or take on all three activities, with adult and family waves designed to create a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere rather than a formal competition.
The swim will take place in the sea, while cycling will be held on a closed circuit in a nearby car park.
The run will follow a flat, accessible route along the esplanade, suitable for wheelchairs and hand cycles.
Bikes, wetsuits and stationary bikes will be available to borrow on the day.
The event is being delivered with partners including RCVDA, Redcar Beach Base, Swim England, Redcar Triathlon Club and Tees Valley Combined Authority.
Dani Penney, regional development manager (Yorkshire & Humber / North East) at British Triathlon, said: “We are excited to be launching the Redcar Swim Bike Run partnership with a free Swim Bike Run event.
“We have started some great partnership work that will provide regular opportunities for local families to get involved in swimming, cycling, walking/running in a way that suits them.
“We will soon be introducing grant funding to work with more deliverers in the community who can provide beginner friendly, accessible swim, bike, walk/run activities.
“We will also be investing in training staff and volunteers and have recently delivered our first Swim Buike Run Community Activator course in Redcar, which provides opportunities for people aged 14+ to upskill and feel confident in supporting delivery.
“We’re at the beginning of our journey here in Redcar and we can’t wait to see the community coming together and having fun at the launch event!”
Councillor Carrie Richardson, cabinet member for climate and culture and deputy leader for Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors to get active, try something new and enjoy everything our coastline has to offer.
“The Swim Bike Run event is designed to be fun, inclusive and accessible to all. We’re proud to support British Triathlon to bring this exciting initiative to Redcar and help build confidence in sport and physical activity within our communities.”
Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen added: “More and more people are discovering what we already know – that Redcar and our coastline are fantastic places to visit, stay and enjoy.
“Events like this give local families a chance to get active and have fun together.
“We want to work with bodies like British Triathlon and our brilliant businesses to create more opportunities for people to make the most of our brilliant outdoor spaces.
“So, I’d urge people to head down and give this a go.”
Participants can book a free place using the code RedcarSBR via the British Triathlon website here.
