Skills Fund to drive tech training

A York and North Yorkshire skills fund is backing new training opportunities in artificial intelligence, 3D printing, electronics and plant machinery simulation.

Four schemes will receive a share of £200,900 from the second phase of mayor David Skaith’s Skills Innovation Fund, which supports skills development across the region.

The latest investment takes the total committed through the fund to £2.5 million and will help independent training providers expand their capacity, buy equipment, train staff and develop new courses.

Mayor Skaith said: “We’re giving people the tools they deserve to access the quality careers that our businesses need.

“My Skills Innovation Fund is backing more than 1000 people to gain the skills they need to get an edge in ways that work for them.

“Working in partnership, we’re making our county a fairer, more resilient, and more productive place to live, work and do business.”

The projects, chosen from six applications and managed by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, are being delivered by providers based across the region.

They include:

  • Enterprise CUBE CIC’s LX Foundry, which will offer training, technology demonstrations and studio equipment loans to strengthen training delivery.
  • HYEN and AI in Schools, which will build capacity in AI, electronics and 3D printing through investment in specialist equipment and staff development.
  • Plant and Safety Training, which has purchased a plant simulator to help new entrants and existing operators develop skills in a controlled environment.
  • Legacy Skills Group, which will focus on digitally upgrading registered qualifications through learning management systems, virtual classrooms, compliant assessment systems, data analytics and employer integration.

The first phase of the fund, announced in May 2025, is supporting more than 1000 learners and tutors across York and North Yorkshire.
