Students take shot at careers in media and events
The next generation of media and events movers and shakers are gaining an invaluable glimpse into the future — thanks to one of Britain’s fastest-growing participation sports.
Super League Basketball (SLB) has partnered with the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB) to offer students hands-on experience of world class hoops.
And two teams of talented newcomers picked up priceless knowhow across several key roles at SLB’s showpiece Trophy and Play-Off finals.
Five UCFB students volunteered their services at The O2, London in May as the curtain came down on British basketball’s top-flight season.
And budding journalist Millie Daniels said: “Basketball is a completely new sport to me.
“Being able to step into a different sporting environment and learn more about the game and how everything works behind the scenes was something I really enjoyed
“The atmosphere all day was amazing and being that close to the action made it even better!”
Millie and her classmates were the second cohort of UCFB students to support the SLB’s off-court delivery at a major final this year.
In February, five more stepped up to complement various media and event management roles at Birmingham’s SLB Trophy finals.
Football Business and Media student Razvan Burnar filed a live match report and added: “It was a great opportunity to improve my writing under real time pressure.
“I wrote pieces on the men’s and women’s finals from the media tribune and it was fantastic to experience a new sport and hone my reporting skills.”
The SLB Trophy finals afforded students the opportunity to shadow the league’s Head of Events, Clare Holmes, with a focus on event build, ticketing, courtside activities, event delivery and back office management.
Media management and delivery was a focus at both finals with SLB’s Head of PR and Marketing, Jamie Thomas, offering invaluable insights into the delivery of matchday videography, photography and written content for online and print.
“We wanted to give the UCFB students a comprehensive overview of what it takes to set up, deliver and publicise a major sporting final,” said the SLB Operations Coordinator, Nick Hill.
“But this wasn’t just a watching brief. There was an opportunity to get involved and fulfil many of the roles that are central to the success of our showpiece finals.
“We were hugely impressed with the attitude, application and ability of the UCFB students and their contribution was greatly appreciated.
“As a fast-growing and ambitious professional league, the SLB is in a prime position to offer the media and events professionals of the future real-world experience.
“At the same time we can keep a close eye on UCFB’s emerging talent!”
UCFB approached SLB towards the end of 2025 with a view to placing students from campuses across the UK, at key SLB fixtures, to support broadening their knowledge base surrounded by experienced professionals at the top of their game.
“Working with Super League Basketball has allowed our students to go behind the scenes and gain a wonderful insight into how a major sporting event is run,” said Simon Fitzjohn, Senior Employability & Career Planning Manager (Wembley Campus), University Campus of Football Business.
“This industry knowledge will no doubt help our students tremendously as they look to forge their own paths in the sports industry."
University Campus of Football Business (UCFB) is a leading destination for degree courses in the sports and football industry. UCFB prides itself on providing students with stimulating curriculum in a unique environment at iconic campuses in London (Wembley Stadium) and Manchester.
