Solar panel firm powers on with tennis club project
A renewable energy apparatus firm has netted a sporting deal.
Westwood Energy has fitted solar panels at Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club.
Bosses say the equipment has helped power the venue’s delivery of the Lexus Ilkley Open this week.
Described as one of the UK’s leading pre-Wimbledon grass court tournaments, the event annually welcomes professional players and thousands of spectators.
Hessle-based Westwood Energy says the solar panels will generate about 150 MWh of renewable electricity every year, delivering annual estimated energy savings of around £20,000.
It adds about 80 per cent of the energy generated will be used on site, with the remaining 20 per cent exported to the grid.
Jack Oxtoby, Westwood Energy founder and managing director, said: “The Lexus Ilkley Open attracts international attention every summer, and it’s fantastic to see a venue of this calibre investing in clean energy infrastructure.
“Projects like this show how local organisations can take practical action to reduce emissions while protecting themselves against long-term energy price volatility.”
Gavin Sutcliffe, Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club general manager, added: “This investment is an important part of our long-term commitment to sustainability and ensuring the club remains fit for the future.”
