New website simplifies regional travel

A regional transport authority has launched a new digital platform designed to make journey planning easier across the North East.

Travel North East has unveiled a new website that brings together travel information for buses, Metro, local rail services and the Shields Ferry in a single online hub.

The launch forms part of North East mayor Kim McGuinness’ plans to improve connectivity across County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.

At the heart of the new platform is a journey planner that combines information from multiple modes of transport, allowing users to plan journeys across the region in one place.

The website has been developed using feedback from the Nexus Insight Panel and has been designed to be easy to navigate on both desktop and mobile devices.

Alongside journey planning tools, the site includes ticketing information, travel updates, contact details and advice on travelling to major regional events.

An events section has also been added to inspire days out across the North East.

Mayor McGuinness said: “Local people in the North East deserve nothing less than an affordable world-class integrated public transport network – one that gives access to real opportunity.

“To have that access, people need a simple, easy to use tool to help them plan their journeys to get to those opportunities.

“This new website offers one central place for journey information and to find support, making lives easier for people, especially those that travel day in, day out across our region.”

The launch marks the first time regional public transport information has been brought together on a single website, replacing the existing Nexus travel site in Tyne and Wear.

Cathy Massarella, managing director of Nexus, added: “We’re also really excited to be unveiling a completely revamped corporate Nexus website this week.

“This website provides an overview of who we are, project updates, latest news and how we are performing, as well as information on opportunities to work with us or for us.

“This is the biggest change to our online site, www.nexus.org.uk, in 15 years.

“It will provide all the latest corporate information from Nexus, and will also promote and direct people to the new Transport North East website where people can access public transport information and plan their journeys.”
