Layer8 set to keep Middlegate on track

A Hull IT solutions provider has secured a new logistics client as it expands its services beyond its long-standing work with an engineering group.

Layer8 has been appointed as IT partner for Middlegate Europe, a transport, warehousing and logistics business with operations in Hull, Zeebrugge and Liège.

Middlegate Europe is one of Layer8’s first major external customers, with the firm providing services including cyber security, network maintenance, proactive monitoring and wider IT support.

Layer8 was previously the IT backbone of engineering company Spencer Group for more than 30 years and is now offering its expertise to external clients.

The company began working with Middlegate Europe after the haulage firm moved away from its former IT provider.

Following an assessment of Middlegate Europe’s infrastructure, cyber security and systems, Layer8 installed enhanced anti-virus software, updated firewalls and addressed issues with the company’s VPN.

Managing director Paul Biggin also visited Middlegate Europe’s Belgian sites to support a merger project linking its networks and creating a more stable IT infrastructure.

He said: “We’re delighted to be working with Middlegate Europe, a fellow family-owned business which has a large presence here in Hull.

“We’ve spent a great deal of time getting to know the business and its systems, conducting monitoring, implementing backups and addressing key issues, as well as, crucially, getting to know the team and their priorities.

“We’re now excited to begin delivering a number of projects which are in the pipeline, while providing an ongoing support service, keeping the business stable and making sure they’re consistently secure across the whole network.”

Further projects are planned, including a new server for Belgian operations, improved warehouse CCTV and ongoing support.
