Builder completes student accommodation scheme
A building contractor has completed work on a student accommodation scheme.
GMI Construction has handed over a York development.
Bosses say the Foss Islands Road venture will provide 133 beds across studios and apartments.
Delivered under a £17 million contract for Urbium Capital and Gregory Property Group, the scheme includes study areas, gym facilities and social spaces.
The building has replaced a former Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Just Tyres site.
The project marks GMI Construction’s third York student accommodation scheme in recent years, having worked on the £50 million, 275-bed Rialto House for Olympian Homes, and the £22 million, 303-bed James Street endeavour for S Harrison Developments.
Ed Weston, GMI Construction Yorkshire regional director, said: “Foss Islands Road is another significant achievement for our team and further demonstrates our expertise in delivering high-quality student accommodation developments in key university cities.
“Across Foss Islands Road, Rialto House and James Street, we have delivered more than 700 much-needed student beds.”
Suliman Aujan, founder and chief executive of London-based Urbium Capital, said: “Foss Islands Road has been a transformational development for this part of the city, and we are delighted to see it completed to such a high standard.”
John McGhee, managing director at Otley-based Gregory Property Group, added: “The completed development delivers a high-quality living experience in a fantastic location and represents another positive investment into York’s future.”
The project’s completion comes after GMI Construction Group broke ground on a 282,000sq ft warehouse and distribution base at Cummins’ Darlington plant, which the engine maker says will “enhance operations, improve efficiency and support future growth”.
GMI Construction Group operates offices in Stockton-on-Tees, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham.
