Gosforth contractor celebrates centenary with institute donation

Family-owned business, H. Malone & Sons, is celebrating its centenary year by donating to The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, part of Newcastle Hospitals Charity.

The Gosforth-based mechanical and electrical contractor has made a £5,000 donation to help build the Sir Bobby Robson Institute, a world leading cancer drug trials centre for the region.

Construction of the £30m institute has just begun on the site of the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. When completed, it will enable ground-breaking cancer treatment that will directly benefit around 3.5 million people living in the North East, North Cumbria and North Yorkshire, as well as making a global impact.

Weston Malone, Managing Director of H. Malone & Sons, recently visited the Freeman Hospital to find out more about the clinical trials of cancer drugs and the hugely positive impact the new institute will make.

Weston says: “As we celebrate our centenary year, we’re proud to support the Sir Bobby Robson Institute with a £5,000 donation knowing this will help advance cancer research and patient care. It was inspiring to learn more about the clinical trials work taking place at the Freeman Hospital and the difference it is making to patients and their families.

“As a family business that has served the North East for 100 years, we believe in supporting initiatives that create a lasting positive impact in our community. The new Institute will play a vital role in improving cancer treatment and outcomes for generations to come, and we are delighted to contribute to that journey.”

The Sir Bobby Robson Institute will be fully funded by The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation with an initial £20m raised by long-standing supporters and fundraisers. Now, a group of generous founding donors including The Barbour Foundation, has brought the total raised for the institute to £26.5m.

Shelley Brunsdon, Fundraising Lead Corporate Giving at Newcastle Hospitals Charity, says: “We’re very grateful to H. Malone & Sons for their generous support and it was a pleasure showing Weston the current clinical trials facilities and the site of the Sir Bobby Robson Institute.

“The work carried out there is going to make an enormous difference to cancer research and treatment in this region and beyond, and support is now crucial to raise the final funds to complete and fully equip the institute by 2027.”
