Getting to know... Adam Binns

In the latest instalment of Bdaily’s Getting to know... feature, which looks at the person behind the business profile, Adam Binns, chief executive at Sheffield-headquartered One Health Group, which works with the NHS to provide orthopaedic, spinal, general surgery, gynaecological and urological care, talks about the joy he takes from helping improve patients’ lives, leading the business through stock market listings and his passion for motorsport and kickboxing.

We know you as the chief executive of One Health Group, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick…

I’m naturally curious, restless and always looking for ways to improve things.

What really energises me is building strong teams, creating a ‘safe to fail’ environment and seeing people grow in confidence and capability.

Outside of work, I like to stay active and spend as much time outdoors as I can.

I enjoy mountain biking and walking, and I’m fortunate to have close family and friends around me who keep me grounded and provide a good sense of balance.

Did you always want to work in the healthcare sector?

Not at all.

When I was young, I wanted to be a train driver.

The closest I got was working for Unipart Rail shortly after the privatisation of British Rail.

By that point, though, I had completed my CIMA qualification and was building my career in finance.

I also worked across retail, manufacturing and logistics before joining One Health.

That journey taught me the value of transferable skills and that with the right attitude, commitment and willingness to learn, you can succeed in almost any sector.

I’m still learning from the people I work with every day.

What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?

The best part is seeing the real-world impact we have on patients’ lives.

Many of the people we support have been living with pain or reduced mobility for a long time, so the feedback we receive can be incredibly powerful and moving.

There aren’t many roles where you see that level of direct impact.

The most challenging period was undoubtedly the pandemic; the uncertainty for our patients, our people and business was difficult to navigate.

However, looking back, it strengthened the organisation and brought the team closer together, which is something we continue to benefit from today.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

There are a few milestones of which I’m particularly proud.

One is supporting the development of the One Health team and SMT as the business has grown from £15 million to £30 million since I joined in 2018.

Another was leading the business through two stock market listings in two years.

Opening the London Stock Exchange in March last year was a surreal and very proud moment, and was something I won’t forget.

How do you relax outside of work?

I’m lucky enough to live on the edge of the Peak District, so I spend a lot of time mountain biking or walking.

It’s the perfect way to switch off, clear my head and stay fit.

Beyond that, I’m a big motorsport fan; if it has an engine and makes a good noise, I’m interested.

What makes Yorkshire such a great place to live and work?

Yorkshire has a great balance of natural beauty, great people and exciting economic growth.

I love the green spaces, particularly around Sheffield, and the friendliness of the people really stands out.

From a work perspective, the region is evolving from its historic industrial base into advanced manufacturing, education, research and a growing creative and cultural sector.

And as someone who enjoys good food, the independent restaurant scene is a real bonus.

Tell us something about you we didn’t know…

I took up kickboxing just before the pandemic as a way of keeping fit, and six years later I’m still at it.

There’s something quite humbling about stepping into the ring with someone half my age and keeping up.

It’s also a brilliant workout and a constant reminder that there’s always room to improve.
