Logistics firm opens self-storage facility

A Yorkshire logistics business has diversified into the self-storage market with the launch of a new purpose-built facility following a multi-million-pound investment.

Hanson Self Storage has officially opened in Huddersfield after securing funding from HSBC to develop the site, which sits alongside the long-established Hanson Logistics operation.

Created by the team behind the family-owned business, which was founded in 1846, the new venture has created five jobs and has ambitions to expand to multiple locations over the next five years.

The 73,000sq ft facility has launched with 500 storage units across three floors, with capacity set to double to 1,000 units once the site is fully fitted out.

The development incorporates advanced technology, including smart entry systems, AI-powered security and environmental monitoring, alongside 24-hour on-site staffing.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the building features solar panels, energy-efficient systems and electric vehicle chargers powered entirely by renewable solar energy, supporting Hanson Logistics’ carbon-neutral operations.

Paul Pheasey, managing director of Hanson Logistics, said: “We have spent years exploring the self-storage market globally and researching the technology and customer demands that we’re now seeing play out in this fast-growing industry.

“With Hanson Self Storage, we wanted to create an industry leading site and service that combines our operational expertise with new technology, whilst staying true to our heritage as a family-owned and family-first business.

“We have exciting expansion plans, but for now, we’re pleased to be able to serve the Huddersfield region once again, for the first time directly to consumers since our home delivery service in 2005.”

Cat Smith, manager at Hanson Self Storage, added: “Demand for self-storage is growing quickly and customers are now looking for a wider range of options.

“These include traditional short-term storage use for house moves to longer-term storage to compensate for space that new properties no longer have, as well as business owners storing commercial items.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer this mix of units alongside leading edge technology, but always with a person available to help, 24/7.”
