Builder begins £26 million stately home scheme
A housebuilder has started work on a £26 million stately home and parkland scheme.
Bargate is redeveloping Southleigh Park into a 61-home estate.
Officials say the venture will convert a Grade II-listed house and associated buildings into 20 properties, with a further 41 new-build homes erected across the site’s grounds.
Spanning one to four-bed homes, they add the development, based in Havant, near Portsmouth, will include Georgian villa and cottage-style houses with electric vehicle charging points.
The blueprint additionally features a commitment to retain “the majority of existing trees, alongside significant new tree planting… and a formal lawn area.”
Construction is earmarked for completion in late 2028.
Led by Bargate and housing association parent company VIVID, the endeavour has been backed by Havant Borough Council, with Farnham-based heritage works firm FSL-Group appointed to deliver the project’s first phase.
Mick Hanson, construction director at Fair Oak-headquartered Bargate, said: “This unique development will preserve and inject new life into a much-loved local landmark, while also opening up the spectacular grounds for the enjoyment of all.
“This project will be an important labour of love for the area, using locally-based, highly skilled tradespeople.
“We are proud to be at the start of the construction journey to create an outstanding development, not only for new residents but the established local community too.”
The project’s launch comes just days after Bargate secured outline planning permission for a 60-home estate in Braishfield, on the outskirts of Romsey, near Southampton.
