Airport launches drive to bolster ATC team

A South Yorkshire airport is recruiting seven more air traffic controllers as it invests in advanced training technology ahead of the return of commercial flights.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has already recruited more than 20 people into Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Air Traffic Services roles, including nine trainees working towards tower and radar qualifications.

It is now looking to fill a further seven positions, including an air traffic controller and senior air traffic controller roles.

The recruitment drive is being led by former employee Andy Hudson, who has returned after 17 years at the airport to head up Air Traffic Services.

To support the growing team, the airport has installed a new Micro Nav 3D tower simulator with integrated radar capability, allowing trainee and experienced controllers to undertake realistic on-site training across both tower and radar operations while helping develop procedures ahead of the airport’s reopening.

The simulator, delivered in partnership with Indra Air Traffic and Cyrrus Ltd, is now fully operational and will support the safe return of air traffic operations.

Andy said: “This is a unique opportunity to help shape a new chapter for the airport.

“People joining us now will play a key role in building our operation, along with all the training, development and professional opportunities that affords.

“They will have a rare opportunity to be a part of the programme in this crucial phase.

“From developing procedures and training programmes to creating the culture and standards that will underpin the airport's long-term success, they will have the chance to make a genuine impact from day one.

“We’re also able to offer an exceptional career pathway.

“Because both tower and radar operations will be based on site, our people can develop their skills across both disciplines.

“That creates opportunities for progression and allows our team to build broad, fulfilling careers here at Doncaster Sheffield Airport whilst being rewarded with an excellent remuneration package.”

The investment forms part of wider preparations for Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s return to service, with freight operations scheduled to resume in 2027 and passenger flights expected to follow in 2028.

Airport bosses said the combination of experienced controllers, new recruits and industry-leading training technology will help build a resilient operation ready for the airport’s reopening.

Simon Hinchley, executive director of airport operations, added: “Each appointment we make and every investment in technology is another step towards reopening the airport with the highest standards of safety, professionalism and service.

“Bringing together experienced people, talented trainees and industry-leading training technology gives us real confidence that we’re building a resilient operation ready to support the airport’s successful return to commercial flights.

“We’re creating an operation that will serve passengers, airlines and the economic growth of the region for many years to come.”
