Culture House launches search for local heroes
People across Sunderland are being invited to nominate local heroes to help mark the opening of the city’s landmark new cultural venue.
Culture House Sunderland is seeking up to 52 individuals who have made a positive difference to their communities to take part in a large-scale ribbon-cutting ceremony when the venue officially opens on September 12.
Residents are encouraged to nominate people whose contributions have improved life in the city through volunteering, education, business, sport, culture, charity work, community action or everyday acts of kindness.
A panel made up of representatives from across Sunderland will review the nominations and select the final 52 participants, with organisers keen to recognise people whose efforts often go unnoticed.
The celebrations will continue beyond the opening day, with each of the chosen individuals featured over the following year in Culture House Sunderland’s Local Studies space, creating a lasting record of the people helping to shape the city.
Councillor Ciera Hudspith, portfolio holder for culture, tourism and heritage at Sunderland City Council, said: “Culture House is for the people of Sunderland, so it feels only right that residents from across the city should be front and centre when it opens.
“We know there are countless individuals in our city who go above and beyond for others, often without recognition.
“This is an opportunity to shine a light on those people and celebrate the positive impact they make, day in and day out, in Sunderland.”
Residents can nominate someone by providing the name of the nominee and a short statement explaining why they should be chosen, via email to Culture.House@sunderland.gov.uk.
