Airport adds thrust with 'landmark' 250-job deal

An aviation base has landed a “transformational” 50-year agreement.

Teesside International Airport has secured an Alfor Aviation deal to develop an aircraft conversion campus at the transport hub.

Bosses say the move will bring £50 million investment and 250 permanent jobs to the region.

They add the investment will see Alfor Aviation relocate its global headquarters to Teesside and establish a facility featuring aircraft hangars, engineering workshops and warehousing.

Construction is expected to begin soon, with the campus due to become operational by the end of 2027.

Once complete, officials say the site will be capable of converting up to 24 passenger aircraft into freighters every year, significantly increasing Alfor Aviation’s production capacity as demand for cargo aircraft continues to grow.

Phil Forster, Teesside International Airport managing director, said: “This is a landmark investment and another major endorsement of the ambitious growth strategy we have been delivering over recent years.

“By bringing its unique technology to Teesside, Alfor Aviation will establish the airport as a centre of excellence for air freight innovation. 

“Our business park is attracting multi-million-pound investments from leading global companies which recognise Teesside as a place where they can invest and grow. 

“Alfor Aviation’s decision to establish its global headquarters here is the latest example of that success. 

“We look forward to supporting its growth over the decades ahead.”

Alfor Aviation says it chose Teesside International Airport after reviewing potential locations across Europe, citing the advantages offered by Teesside Freeport, the airport’s transport links and the region’s industrial capability, skilled workforce and long-term growth potential.

Director Omer Mafa added: “This is a transformational moment for Alfor Aviation and a major vote of confidence in the UK and Teesside.

“Nowhere matched what Teesside offers. 

“The deciding factor was Teesside Freeport; as the UK's largest free trade zone, it provides exactly the kind of internationally competitive environment innovative aerospace businesses need. 

“From Teesside, we will build one of the world’s leading aircraft conversion operations.”

Officials say the investment is also expected to generate additional work for manufacturers, engineering firms, maintenance providers and aviation businesses across the North East supply chain.

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen added: “This is another huge vote of confidence in Teesside, our airport and the fantastic opportunities we are creating across our region.”
