Basketball venture tips off to support women's sport

A basketball-based financial venture is shooting for even greater success after returning to boost women’s sport.

Newcastle Eagles’ ‘W Club’ has tipped off for a second season.

Building on a successful debut campaign, officials say the endeavour aims to “expand its network, increase financial backing and elevate the profile of women’s sport in the North East to new heights”.

The initiative last year brought together regional business leaders who pledged financial backing and support to Newcastle Eagles Women’s team, which safeguarded the side’s place on the court.

And as the new season approaches, the founding group is calling on the North East’s business community to build on the momentum.

‘W Club’ membership includes networking opportunities, brand exposure and game ticketing packages, alongside support for the club’s grassroots outreach programme.

Sophie Milliken, chief executive at public relations and personal branding firm Moja, and ‘W Club’ founding group member, said: “What we achieved last year proved exactly what happens when the North East business community steps up.

“But we are just getting started.

“This isn't just about survival; it’s about growth, visibility and creating a sustainable legacy for women in sport.”

Chloe Gaynor, Eagles Women’s head coach, added: “The ‘W Club’ has been vital for the continuity of the women’s programme.

“We have gained a community of like-minded business owners who want to push forward and support the women’s game.

“I’d like to thank them for their support over the last 12 months, and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve in the second year.”

Alongside Sophie, founding members of ‘W Club’ include Carl Swansbury, partner and head of corporate finance at Ryecroft Glenton; David Pritchard, head of business development and marketing at law firm Sintons; Jon Dudgeon, co-founder and chief executive at accountancy and business advisory firm Blu Sky; Sarah Thackray, co-founder at BeaconHouse Events; and Elaine Stroud, Entrepreneurs’ Forum chief executive.
