Power tools retailer expands operations

A County Durham power tools retailer is gearing up for its next phase of growth after investing in a new warehouse that will more than double its operational footprint.

Newton Aycliffe-based Power Tool World is targeting annual turnover of £58 million as it expands its facilities, product range and online presence ahead of its 30th anniversary.

Founded in Darlington almost three decades ago before relocating to Newton Aycliffe, the business has grown into one of the UK’s largest online retailers of professional power tools and accessories.

Today it employs around 50 people, stocks more than 8000 products and dispatches between 800 and 1500 orders every day to customers across the UK.

The company currently operates from two warehouses totalling 32,000sq ft.

A newly acquired 36,000sq ft facility will increase its total warehouse space to 68,000sq ft as part of an investment of between £3 million and £5 million.

Bosses say the new site will feature advanced automation technology designed to improve efficiency and support continued growth.

Managing director Liam Rafferty, who joined the business just over a year ago, said the investment reflects the company’s long-term ambitions.

Liam said: “We are a £58m business two minutes from the A1.

“A lot of people locally have no idea we exist. That is going to change.

“We want to have the best range of power tools at the best prices.

“We want every delivery to be next day.

“We want customers to be able to depend on us to deliver their projects and their dreams.

“That is what we are here for.”

Power Tool World experienced significant growth following the pandemic, increasing turnover to around £40 million, with continued double-digit annual growth since then.

The company now aims to reach £58 million in annual revenue while expanding its range of products and strengthening partnerships with additional suppliers.

Alongside the warehouse investment, the retailer plans to broaden its presence across some of the UK’s largest online marketplaces, making its products available to a wider customer base.

Liam added: “This is not just about capacity.

“It is about being able to serve our customers better and faster as we grow.

“We have purchased our third warehouse and are investing in automation that will put us right at the top of what is possible in our market.

“That sends a clear message about where we are going.”

Despite its national reach, the company remains headquartered in Newton Aycliffe, where it has quietly built a substantial operation over nearly 30 years.

Liam added: “My personal ambition is to build something great for the people of the North East.

“Good quality, secure, well paid jobs, a business this region can be proud of.”
