Council in eight-figure waste vehicle fleet outlay

A local authority is sprucing up waste collection operations with an eight-figure investment.

Northumberland County Council is replacing its fleet and upgrading vehicle maintenance facilities.

Officials say the £13 million move will “secure reliable waste and recycling collections for years to come”.

They add the outlay covers more than 50 vehicles, with all wagons set to be on the road by November 2027.

The council is also spending £3.3 million on a six-bay workshop at Tyne Mills, which will maintain refuse collection vehicles, gritters, road sweepers and ride-on mowers. 

Councillor John Riddle, Northumberland County Council cabinet member for environment, rural and farming, said: “This is a significant investment in one of the most important frontline services we provide for residents. 

“We recognise there have been occasions in recent months where collections have been affected by vehicle breakdowns.

“These investments demonstrate our commitment to addressing those challenges and delivering a first-class service for communities across Northumberland.”
