Funding helps support post office relocation

A County Durham post office has moved to a new town centre home following funding support aimed at safeguarding access to key community services.

Spennymoor Post Office has relocated to the former Lloyds Bank building on Cheapside, with part funding approved by the All Together for Spennymoor Board, administered by Durham County Council.

The move will maintain access to postal, banking and customer services for thousands of residents while providing a more modern and sustainable environment for customers and staff.

It is also hoped the relocation will help strengthen Spennymoor town centre by improving access to key services and supporting footfall for surrounding businesses.

Further support was provided by the National Federation of Subpostmasters, which worked with Post Office Limited to secure funding towards the relocation.

Alan Boddy, chief executive of Livin and chair of the All Together for Spennymoor Board, said: “Maintaining key services within our town centre is essential in supporting both residents and local businesses.

“The board's contribution demonstrates the importance of partnership working in delivering positive outcomes for Spennymoor and ensuring that important community assets continue to thrive.”

The move comes alongside wider regeneration activity in the town, including proposals for a new public car park on the site of the former Spennymoor Library and adjoining private land.

Councillor Karen Allison, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street, added: “The Post Office plays a crucial role in the daily lives of residents, businesses and community organisations across Spennymoor.

“By supporting this relocation, we are helping to secure this essential service for the future, while contributing to the wider regeneration of the town centre.

“This investment reflects our commitment to creating a vibrant, accessible and sustainable town centre that works for everyone.”
