Glasgow Science Centre expands board

Glasgow Science Centre has appointed two new trustees and named Ian Laird as chair as it marks its 25th anniversary.

Kim McKann and Professor Tom Steele have joined the board, where they will help shape the STEM education charity and visitor attraction’s strategy and support its management team.

Kim is chief commercial officer at Protium and brings 30 years of experience across the energy, technology and management consultancy sectors, alongside a background in finance and engineering.

Tom is director of strategic infrastructure planning and delivery at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and has experience in long-term investment planning across healthcare infrastructure.

Kim said: “I am really excited to be joining the board of the Glasgow Science Centre at this exciting time in the Centre's history. 

“I’m looking forward to working with colleagues to make this a global destination in Glasgow for international visitors.” 

Prof. Steele added: “Being appointed to the board is real honour and privilege and I am very much looking forward to working with fellow board members and all staff.  

“In its 25th anniversary year, this is an exciting opportunity to reflect on the Centre’s contribution to science and education and how we can collectively shape it’s future.” 

Ian, who joined the board as a trustee in March 2024, succeeds Dr David Sibbald as chair.

A former chief executive and experienced non-executive director, he brings more than 30 years of leadership experience spanning engineering manufacturing, technology, process industries, luxury goods and FMCG.

Ian said: “Glasgow Science Centre has spent 25 years inspiring people to ask questions, explore ideas, be entertained and imagine what might be possible. 

“I am honoured to become chair and look forward to working with Stephen and the whole team to build on those remarkable foundations, ensuring the Science Centre continues to inspire curiosity, widen opportunity and help shape Scotland’s future.” 

The appointments come as Glasgow Science Centre celebrates 25 years since opening and looks towards its next phase of development.

The organisation, which operates as a visitor attraction and STEM education charity, currently employs more than 170 people.

Chief executive Dr Stephen Breslin added: “Now is an exciting time for Glasgow Science Centre as we celebrate 25 years of achievement and inspiration this year, and I am delighted to welcome our two new board members to into their roles, as we begin to look ahead to what the future holds for the Science Centre as a business and as a leading educational charity. 

“Both Ms McKann and Prof. Steele bring with them impressive and invaluable experience that is sure to support and further the Science Centre’s strategic ambitions.

“I am also delighted to see Ian Laird take on the role of chair of the board and wish him every success in his new position.”
