Morrisons 'delivering on plan' after sales increase
Supermarket Morrisons has hailed the impact of a turnaround strategy after revealing its strongest sales growth for more than a year.
The retailer saw group like-for-like sales rise 3.2 per cent over the 13 weeks to July 26, with total sales increasing to £4.1 billion for the quarter.
The Bradford-headquartered national operator said its performance was boosted by hot weather and the football World Cup.
It said trading was “robust” and surpassed the wider UK grocery market after investment into improving its pricing.
Bosses added “lower prices” helped drive an increase in sales volumes, while the group also revealed a double-digit jump in online sales.
Trading was further buoyed by the continued growth of its convenience business, having opened 71 Morrisons Daily franchise outlets this year, with “hundreds more” planned for the coming years.
Boss Rami Baitieh said: “Our stronger sales momentum reflected a broad-based improvement across the business – with our supermarkets, online, convenience, pharmacy and Myton manufacturing businesses all reporting good growth.
“Our stronger like-for-like sales, the combination of lower prices and volume growth, and our market share improvement are all clear evidence our strategy is delivering.”
