AWS event aims to open doors for tech SMEs

North East technology businesses are being offered a route into new public sector opportunities at a free event focused on procurement, partnerships and growth.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will host its Think Big for Small Business event at The Catalyst, Newcastle Helix, on October 19.

The event is aimed at UK technology businesses employing between ten and 250 people that are looking to scale and explore opportunities within the public sector.

Dynamo North East is supporting the event by raising awareness among technology businesses across the region.

Attendees will receive practical guidance on accessing public sector contracts, navigating procurement frameworks and working alongside larger technology partners.

SME founders will also share their experiences of securing and delivering public sector technology contracts, including lessons learned while growing their businesses.

The programme will feature a live demonstration exploring generative artificial intelligence and emerging cloud technologies, focusing on how smaller businesses can use them to improve productivity and identify new opportunities.

Speakers include Holly Ellis, AWS director, public sector UK tech team; Lester McPherson, AWS director, professional services partners; Rick Houghton, AWS head of retail and CPG solution architecture; and Katy John, AWS senior business development manager.

David Dunn, chief executive of Dynamo North East, said: “We are pleased to help raise awareness of Think Big for Small Business among technology companies across the North East.

“The programme addresses important topics for growing SMEs, including public sector procurement, partnership working and the practical use of emerging technologies.

“These themes also featured strongly in our recent Dynamo Leadership Forum on public procurement and social value.

“The discussions highlighted how closer engagement with commissioners, clearer routes into procurement and stronger relationships with larger partners could help SMEs better understand and pursue relevant opportunities.

“Having an event of this kind take place in Newcastle gives eligible businesses from across the region an opportunity to hear directly from AWS speakers, technology partners and SMEs with relevant experience.

The wider programme will also examine how larger technology companies work with SMEs on major projects, including routes into their supply chains.

The event is free to attend, with businesses required to register in advance.
