Plans unveiled for 'iconic waterfront' arts complex

Regeneration bosses have unveiled a multi-million-pound entertainment complex blueprint.

Gateshead Council hopes to create an open-air performance square at the town’s Gateshead Quays.

Officials say the plans “mark a significant milestone” in wider proposals to “transform the area into a major destination for the wider North East”.

They add the blueprint – which has been backed by £24 million from the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority – will help prepare the site for future developments that include the proposed Gateshead Quays arena.

A decision on the plans – which also include an arrival plaza and a so-called linear park area – is expected in the coming weeks.

Councillor Steve Campion, Gateshead Council cabinet member for economic development, said: “These proposals represent a major step forward in delivering the vision for Gateshead Quays.

“If planning permission is granted, we will see beautiful and high-quality public spaces.

“This initial work is also fundamental to unlocking the site’s future potential and creating the conditions needed to bring forward future development opportunities, including the proposed arena.”

He added the complex would use designs that nod to Gateshead’s mining past, with features planned to “reflect the layers of coal and rock beneath the ground”.

North East mayor Kim McGuinness said the plans – whose £24 million North East Mayoral Strategic Authority boost forms part of a previously announced £104 million cultural pot – would help turn Gateshead Quays into “a world-class destination”.

She added: “I want to see the biggest acts performing in a new arena on the banks of the Tyne. 

“We no longer want to see acts like Harry Styles and Taylor Swift skipping the region because we don’t have a venue big enough for all their North East fans. 

“But it’s also important that this iconic waterfront works for local people now because it has been overlooked for too long. 

“That's why we’re investing in a new performance square and park that people can enjoy every day.”
