Refurb ‘future-proofs’ Hornsea development

A Yorkshire construction company has completed the transformation of a 1970s sheltered and supported living development into 14 modern apartments.

Hobson & Porter has refurbished Meregarth in Hornsea for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, replacing its previous mix of bedsits, flats and a maisonette with 14 one-bedroom homes.

Delivered through the YORBuild 3 Medium Works framework, the project includes thermal upgrades designed to reduce heat loss and residents’ energy costs.

Improvements also include enhanced sound insulation between apartments, modern internal finishes, superfast fibre broadband and newly landscaped outdoor areas.

Richard Hunter, managing director of Hobson & Porter, said: “Meregarth had become an outdated building that required a major overhaul to bring it up to current standards and make better use of the space.

“The project involved upgrading almost every part of the existing building, whilst introducing measures to make the homes much more comfortable and energy-efficient.

“The completed development now combines the latest infrastructure and technology with high-quality accommodation, ensuring Meregarth will continue to be a popular place to live that is genuinely future-proofed.”

The scheme forms part of a wider council investment programme aimed at improving its existing sheltered and supported living accommodation.

Hobson & Porter has also started work on a similar refurbishment at the council-owned Pybus Court in Hornsea.

Built in the 1980s, Pybus Court previously contained 12 bedsits, three one-bedroom flats and three maisonettes.

Following its refurbishment, the development will provide 11 one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments, creating further energy-efficient sheltered and supported housing in the town.

The two projects were awarded under a single contract and are being delivered sequentially to create efficiencies and maintain continuity of labour.

Councillor Michael Lee, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for housing and infrastructure, added: “We’re proud to invest in our housing stock, and the refurbishment of Meregarth will play a key role in providing modern apartments that are best suited to the needs of residents.”
