Nirvana hits stride with six-figure investment
A North East sports travel business is accelerating its digital transformation and international growth following a six-figure investment.
Nirvana Europe has secured backing from NPIF II – NEL Debt Finance, managed by NEL Fund Managers as part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II).
Founded in 1999 as the official travel and accommodation partner to the Great North Run, the business has developed into a specialist event travel, accommodation and logistics provider.
It has established a global presence across endurance sports, including triathlon and IRONMAN events.
Bosses say the latest investment will support a transformation programme focused on technology, data and commercial development, improving operational efficiency and customer experience while creating a more scalable platform for future growth.
They add that funding will be used to introduce a new sales and booking platform, strengthen marketing and data capabilities, expand the team and create capacity to pursue further partnerships, events and commercial opportunities.
Nigel Morris, managing director at Nirvana Europe, which is headquartered in Wallsend at the Silverlink Business Park, said: “We’re investing significantly in our technology, our people, and our commercial capability, which will allow us to operate more efficiently, make better use of our data and ultimately deliver an even better experience for our customers.
“We’ve had a really positive experience working with NEL.
“From the outset, the team took the time to properly understand Nirvana, our ambitions and what we are trying to achieve over the next few years.
“This investment gives us the ability to accelerate a transformation that is already well underway across the business.
“We see a significant opportunity to grow Nirvana over the coming years, both through our existing partnerships and by winning new business and having NEL supporting us on that journey gives us a really strong platform from which to do that.”
NEL first invested in Nirvana Europe in 2024 to support its expansion into North America, which has since grown to represent a significant share of turnover.
During the same period, the number of events supported by the business each year has increased from 70 to 180, while its services now reach customers across 120 countries.
Jane Siddle, senior investment executive at NEL, added: “Nirvana is a highly specialised event travel company, providing bespoke travel and accommodation packages for sporting and leisure events worldwide.
“The business holds long-standing official travel partner status with leading organisations including IRONMAN, British Triathlon and USA Triathlon, alongside a number of other major sporting bodies.
“These enduring partnerships are testament to the quality of service, operational excellence and consistent delivery that Nirvana provides.
“The management team approached NEL for additional funding with a clear and well-defined growth strategy, focused not only on increasing scale but also on strengthening the operational and organisational foundations of the business.
“This disciplined approach will ensure that growth is both sustainable and scalable over the long term.
“I have strong confidence in the Nirvana management team and their ability to execute this strategy, and I look forward to continuing to support the business as it delivers on its growth ambitions, expands its market position and reinforces its reputation as a leader within its niche sector.”
The £660 million NPIF II fund, operated by British Business Bank, provides loans from £25,000 to £2 million and equity investment up to £5 million to help small and medium-sized businesses.
Sarah Newbould, senior investment manager at British Business Bank, added: “Nirvana Europe has built an impressive international business from its base in the North East and its continued growth demonstrates the potential of ambitious businesses to expand into new markets.
“Through NPIF II, we’re committed to supporting businesses as they invest in technology and people, helping to build the capacity to grow sustainably and create further opportunities in the region.”
NEL Fund Managers also manages NPIF II – NEL Smaller Loans, which provides investments of between £25,000 and £100,000 to support emerging and established businesses.
