Architect builds for future with city office move

An architectural practice says it is building for future success after completing an office expansion.

MawsonKerr has opened a Leeds studio.

Bosses at the Newcastle-headquartered business say the venture will support growth plans across areas including Leeds, York, Harrogate, South Yorkshire and the Peak District.

Based at The Department in Leeds Dock, they add the endeavour will create jobs as it targets work with property developers, private clients and public sector organisations.

The studio is led by associate Daniel Dyer, who has worked at MawsonKerr for 12 years and acted as project architect on a number of low-carbon residential projects.

Daniel said: “Opening in Leeds is an exciting step and gives us a permanent base from which to build relationships and grow our workload across Yorkshire.

“We are an ambitious practice and will look to grow organically over the next year as the workload develops.”

He added the office will amplify the presence of 12-staff MawsonKerr – founded by architects Will Mawson and Dan Kerr in 2010 – in Yorkshire, where it is already working on the redevelopment of a derelict Leeds mill and a proposed 13-home South Yorkshire scheme.

Previous projects include a café at Mount Grace Priory, in North Yorkshire, and renovation work at Whitby Abbey for English Heritage.

“Yorkshire has a vibrant property sector and clients who increasingly recognise the importance of contextual, sustainable design, so Leeds feels like a natural next step for us.”
