Programme offers boost to rural firms

Rural businesses across Northumberland are being offered specialist support to help them grow, diversify and create jobs through a new regional programme.

The support forms part of the North East Rural Growth Programme (NE-RGP), which was announced yesterday (September 29) as a new regionwide initiative supporting businesses and individuals across rural communities.

The programme provides tailored assistance to businesses working across sectors including farming, food and drink, land-based industries and rural tourism.

Northumberland businesses will be able to access guidance through the Northumberland Small Business Service (NSBS), which will help eligible firms understand the opportunities available and connect them with relevant support.

Designed to increase productivity and encourage innovation, the programme will help rural businesses develop new products and services, diversify and strengthen their resilience.

Northumberland County Council is lead delivery partner, working alongside Durham County Council, Gateshead Council, Northumberland National Park Authority, Food and Drink North East and North East Enterprise Agency.

NSBS will provide fully funded one-to-one support from industry experts, workshops covering areas including social media marketing and basic accounting, networking opportunities and dedicated business adviser support.

NSBS programme manager Lucy Evermore said: “Delivering the support through NSBS, an already trusted programme across Northumberland, enables us to build on our excellent relationships with businesses across the county while extending our reach and connecting with more businesses across the wider North East.

“We look forward to continuing to support businesses here in Northumberland, while also working with our partners to ensure businesses across the region can benefit from the specialist support available through the North East Rural Growth Programme. 

“It’s a great opportunity to build on what we already do well and extend that support to even more businesses across the region.”

Businesses can also access specialist assistance through Food and Drink North East and the North East Farm Business Support Service.

The programme is funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority through its Rural Growth Programme and Integrated Settlement.
