Digital TV more popular than ever
Digital TV viewing has overtaken analogue-only viewing for the first time, according to official Ofcom figures. 72.5% of UK households now receive digital TV services, up 3% from 2005. The growth of digital TV has been fuelled by 1.2 million sales of Freeview set-top boxes and Integrated Digital Television sets, exceeding the 860,000 sales for the corresponding period in 2005. Freeview offers approximately 30 TV channels, compared to the hundreds available on satellite and cable services. Crucially, however, the service does not require a monthly subscription. Freeview is a joint venture between the BBC, BSkyB, National Grid Wireless, ITV and Channel 4.
