Iconic Tees bridge design gets the go ahead
Designs for a landmark footbridge to span the River Tees have been granted planning permission. The bridge will form a focal point of the £18m North Shore development which will feature homes, offices, hotels and restaurants alongside the River Tees.Castlegate Marine Club had raised an objection regarding the height of the footbridge. However, the planning committee was satisfied with the plans, giving the structure the green light this week. The leader of Stockton Council, Cllr Bob Gibson, has welcomed the decision. He said: “The bridge will be an important link between Teesdale and the proposed development on North Shore. “The highly successful developments on the Teesdale side of the river, and the proposed state-of-the-art development on North Shore, warrant a bridge of the highest quality and design. “We have seen in Gateshead and Newcastle the positive impact a beautifully designed structure, such as the Millennium Bridge, can have on two very high class river front environments. “We expect to mirror that quality of engineering innovation in the design of this landmark bridge.“The structure, which will link North Shore with Teesdale, is due to be completed by the end of 2008.
