An action plan for conserving a world heritage site in Durham is to out to consultation. A draft management plans has been prepared which sets out priorities for enhancing Durham’s Norman Cathedral and associated Castle, as well as preserving its architecture and historic significance. Durham Cathedral and Castle became a World Heritage Site in 1986 is one of two in North East England; the other is Hadrian’s Wall. There are 812 World Heritage Sites around the globe, including the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Canyon.John Holmes, Director of Regeneration and Tourism at One NorthEast which funded the draft plan, said: “Durham Castle and Cathedral are recognised throughout the world as one of the region’s finest cultural assets. The new management plan will not only ensure that the Site is protected for future generations but allow us to maximise its potential. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Durham to have their say on the future of the Site. The World Heritage site is the jewel in the City’s crown and will be a key part of the newly formed Durham Area Tourism Partnership’s efforts to promote the area.“A display promoting the plan will tour the Durham area for the next three months beginning at Durham Cathedral today (7 June). The draft plan can also be viewed and downloaded from www.onenortheast.co.uk/page/durhamwhsmp.cfm.
