Record North East employment rates
Record levels of people are in work in the North East, according to the latest statistics from the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC). Employment now stands at 1,162,000 (71.6%) – a rise of 36,000 year on year. Unemployment has fallen by 3,000 to 74,000 (6.0%).Mike Parker, spokesman for the North East Chamber of Commerce, said: “The North East economy today is worlds apart from where it was a couple of decades ago. It is much more resilient and these record employment figures reflect that fact. “The Chamber’s latest economic survey shows that North East businesses are competing in a tough arena and this may well be reflected in labour market statistics later this year. The North East Business Barometer shows fewer of our members are more cautious about taking on staff than they were at the start of the year.”
