UK music scene gets stamp of approval
Some of the liveliest and most diverse vibes in UK music are being celebrated through a set of special stamps. Royal Mail’s five Sound of Britain stamps, issued today, show how the world’s music arrived at our shores and fused with homegrown influences.
Each stamp shows a pair of performers representing different kinds of music enjoyed in the UK today. This includes a Bollywood movie dancer and a sitar player (1st class), a reggae bass guitarist and djembe drummer (42p), a fiddler and harpist (50p), a sax player and blues guitarist (72p), and Salsa dancers (£1.19). The stamps were selected as five examples of the influences which the UK’s musical talent has mixed, merged and mastered to conjure up original sounds.
Julietta Edgar, Head of Special Stamps at Royal Mail, said: “The UK’s appetite for making inspirational music by fusing sounds of different cultures is limitless. This is why we chose to sample such a rich variety of sounds on these stamps.”
