Financial firm uses brainpower Logically
A Tyneside-based financial software firm that has become one of the region’s most aggressive recruiters of highly intelligent graduates has rewarded two talented students from the North East. Richard Payne, 23, and Peter Nuttall, 21, won the Scott Logic Excellence Prize this week for being the top students on their Computing Science courses at Newcastle and Durham universities respectively.
The pair received their trophies from Gary Scott, the managing director of Newcastle-based Scott Logic. In addition, both students will be rewarded with a job interview at the company once their studies end in June.
Gary Scott says: “The North East is unique in that it is home to five universities amidst a population of 2.5 million. But due to shortages of job opportunities, many of the graduates from these universities leave the region. It has become a very big priority to retain these graduates in the local area and Scott Logic is in an excellent position to offer first class job opportunities to the very brightest of talent. “By working very closely with the universities, we believe we can use their graduates as the main source of talent for staffing Scott Logic in the long-term. This will have the benefit of ensuring a plentiful supply of home-grown talent.
Carri Cunliffe, sector development manager at Codeworks Connect, said: “The universities in North East England produce some of the UK’s brightest technology graduates. Sunderland University, for example, is the largest IT training facility in the country. “It’s hugely important for the future of the knowledge economy in North East England that these people remain within the region - that we retain and recruit the very brightest minds - so initiatives like the ones Scott Logic is running are extremely beneficial.”
