Businesses blooming in the North East
Staff at Northumbrian Water got up close and personal with the region’s natural environment this week, as they were trained in wild flower identification by Tyne & Wear Museums. On Wednesday the Exploring Your Environment (EYE) Project team and volunteers trained a team of Northumbrian Water volunteers in wild flower identification. The EYE Project, which is sponsored by Northumbrian Water, aims to encourage people to get actively involved in learning about and safeguarding the environment.
John Mowbray, Director of Corporate Affairs at Northumbrian Water said: “The flower challenge was a fun way to sew some seeds of knowledge! Northumbrian Water’s partnership with Tyne & Wear Museums on this project is key as we are both immersed in community life and the environment is at the core of all we do. “The EYE Project is a simple yet effective way to get people of all ages interested in the environment on their doorstep and once they understand more about it they will appreciate how important it is to look after it and spread the message.”
Staff spent the morning learning about species identification and wild flower recording techniques at Northumbrian Water’s Abbey Road offices, before heading out after lunch to Low Newton Junction Nature Reserve in Durham to put their newfound knowledge to the test.
Tyne & Wear Museums’ business membership scheme, Connecting through Culture, is the largest in the region with 20 members. In the past year the Business Partners have supported projects across the Tyne & Wear Museums service, including community outreach, exhibitions and education activities with an investment of over £30,000.
