World record attempt at Teesside circuit

A North East motor racing circuit has been chosen for a world record attempt. A four-strong team will bid to etch their names in motor sports annals by shattering the world 24-hour distance record for a motor-powered kart this Thursday, 20 September.

The Equipe Vitesse karters, all from Kent, have chosen to stage their 100mph assault on the record at Teesside Autodrome, near Middlesbrough, which is the longest and fastest karting circuit in Britain. They are hoping that local motor sports fans will turn out in force to cheer them on.

Equipe Vitesse are one of the most successful karting teams in Europe, having won the Le Mans 24 hour event four times in the past six years. The team will share the driving during the record attempt in one-hour stints.

Team member Joe Flay said: “Teesside Autodrome is a magnificent karting circuit, probably one of the fastest in the world, never mind the UK and Europe. We’ve known Bob Pope for 20 years and admire what he’s achieved here in the North East. We’ve had a very successful year and smashing the world record on a British karting circuit would be the icing on the cake.”

The existing record of 1,709.9 km was set at Kirkistone, in Ireland, and Equipe Vitesse attempt to beat it will be independently verified by the Motor Sports Association, motor racing’s governing body.

The race gets under way at the circuit in South Bank, near Middlesbrough, at 9am. Entry is free for spectators and the Chequered Flag café-bar will remain open throughout the 24-hour marathon. For further information contact Joe Flay on 07889 487252.
