Firms advised not to get 'Shanghaied' on IPR

North East firms have been warned not to get “Shanghai-d” over intellectual property rights (IPR) when doing business in China. UK Trade & Investment has teamed up with the China-Britain Business Council and international law firm Stephenson Harwood & Lo to host a seminar focusing on “Doing business in China: IPR issues” at Durham County Cricket Club, in Chester-le-Street, on Thursday 25 October.

Dr Zhengming Yang, UK Trade & Investment’s China Business Development Manager, said: “China offers a wealth of opportunities for North East firms but the protection of intellectual property rights has been highlighted as one of the key concerns for those entering this market. Stories of reverse engineering, fake products and abuse of China’s first to file system have all contributed to these concerns, but the good news is things are improving. And this event offers a useful insight into the issues surrounding IPR, how to register IPR in China, what practical measures can be taken to minimise the risk and what support companies can expect from the Chinese authorities.”
