Festival unearths design talent
A regional festival which showcases the design talent in North East England opened earlier this week. Featuring a series of design exhibitions taking place across the region, Design Event 07 (DE07) will see local, national and international designers showcasing their creative talent. It forms part of North East England’s festivals and events programme, launching the region as the ‘creative hub’ for UK design talent.
The festival was opened by festival director, Karen Stone, at the National Glass Centre (NGC) in Sunderland. On show at the NGC is a huge figure of eight seating platform by designer Mathias Bengtsson, constructed out of carbon fibre normally used in space technology. The exhibition forms part of the One Off Factory across galleries in Sunderland exploring prototyping and new designs.
On Saturday it’s all about the popular Helvetica font with 50 Years of Helvetica showing at Globe Gallery, direct from the Design Museum in London; and ‘Helvetica’ the documentary screening at the Tyneside Cinema.
Karen Stone said: “This year’s programme is extremely strong and really covers the breadth of design from furniture to film. Alongside the high profile national and international designers exhibiting, we’ve also got the cream of regional designers launching new products showing North East England as the hotbed of creative talent it is. Interest in the festival so far has been huge, with some talks and events already fully booked.”
