University and businesses join forces
Northumbria University this week opened the doors of its new multi-million pound City Campus East to business leaders from across the region. The private preview evening, organised by the University’s School of Design and EEF Northern, was designed to strengthen links between the University and the regions’ businesses.
Representatives from North East Engineering and Manufacturing companies attended the event and were given a tour of the £70 million campus.
Professor Robert Young, Associate Dean for Research and Consultancy at the School of Design, said: “At the School of Design we strongly advocate collaboration and cross disciplinary working and see this as key to innovation and delivering design with a purpose.
“We were delighted to welcome EEF members to our new School and to have the opportunity to share examples of our collaborative projects with them and demonstrate clearly how design makes a difference. We look forward to collaborating with EEF and its affiliate companies in the near future and hope this is the start of a long and mutually beneficial partnership.”
The event was one of the first opportunities for the business community to visit the School’s new campus. The University has invested heavily in design and hopes to create new opportunities for businesses in the North East.
Alan Hall, Director EEF Northern, said: “With the skills shortage situation we are currently experiencing, relations between businesses and the region’s educational institutions is essential. The new campus, its facilities and the University’s ambition are going to bring new and exciting opportunities to organisations across the North East.”
