Students are no mugs when it comes to enterprise

A group of school children from Bedlington are reviving a profitable venture they initiated last year. The ten 14 and 15 year old students at St Benet Biscop Catholic High School are also upping the scale of their ‘Passionate Places, Passionate Students’ project.

The students have been designing mugs bearing images of Northumberland that they photographed over a two day trip across the county in July. The pupils implemented every stage of the business process, from writing the bid to guarantee funding, through to market research and securing a supplier to produce the mugs.

Jane Hodgson, a student from St Benet Biscop, said: “Our involvement in this project has taught us many skills, especially communication and the ability to work as part of a team which will be useful to us when we get a job. We enjoyed using our creative skills and we’re all really proud of what the team have achieved so far.”

Dee Stephenson, enterprise manager for Northumberland Strategic Partnership, said: “The students are building on a project that really illustrated the success of Enterprise Week last year. They are getting a great deal out of this business venture, not only academically but they are also picking up important people skills and I’m impressed with how the group have bonded and really got to grips with the market research.”

The bone china mugs will be sold for £5.99. If you’re interested, they can be ordered by calling the school on 01670 822795.
