Businesses urged to cut carbon emissions
Businesses could save money by following carbon-cutting measures outlined in a new action plan, says the Carbon Trust. The Trust said that UK businesses could save around £1.4bn and more than 11m tonnes of carbon by following the guidelines in their ‘New Year business action plan’.
The list of energy-efficient measures has been designed to be easy to follow, but with maximum impact on a business’ energy expenditure. Guidelines include replacing tungsten light bulbs with fluorescent lamps or energy efficient light bulbs, switching off PCs and electrical equipment at night, reducing the heating and fitting seven-day timers to water coolers and vending machines so they switch off out of hours.
The Trust added that before implementing the guidelines, it is essential for businesses to calculate their carbon footprint so they can ‘benchmark’ their progress as they go along.
Tom Delay, the Trust’s chief executive, said: “Reducing your carbon footprint through improved energy efficiency should be the top of the new year’s resolution list for any business in 2008. “Our six steps show that putting energy efficiency and carbon saving into action couldn’t be easier.“Â
