Chamber training reaps rewards

Career guidance from the North East Chamber of Commerce made good financial sense for two teenagers. Catherine Wright and Andrew Gilmore, both 19, were placed at Active Financial Services in Guisborough as part of the North East Chamber of Commerce job match initiative.

Catherine, who joined Active Financial in October 2006, said: “Working for Active Financial, but also knowing I have the support of the Chamber of Commerce, has been very good for my career and has certainly raised my aspirations.

Andrew had planned to work towards a career in accountancy after leaving Guisborough’s Laurence Jackson School, but is now delighted the Chamber of Commerce steered him towards the financial services sector.

He said: “Initially, I couldn’t see myself as a financial advisor, but when I came to Active Financial for the interview, I instantly felt I would be joining a company that was going places.”

Kirsty Herbert, NECC training advisor, said: “We offer young people a window of opportunity - matching their potential with available jobs and then continuing to offer support so that they gain experience and qualifications that develops their career and is also beneficial to their employers. “Catherine and Andrew are happy and focused on very clear career goals and I’m sure will go on to enjoy a lot of success in their chosen fields.”

Karl Pemberton, Active Financial’s sales and marketing director, said: “We are in the process of appointing experienced independent financial advisors, but by nurturing the careers of two young people like Catherine and Andrew we are also keeping our eye on the company’s long-term future.”
