Lessons lead to love

It’s Valentine’s Day, as evidenced by our Valentine bdaily logo at the top of today’s bulletin, and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) have some romance-themed survey results for us.

Their new study has revealed that one of the best ways to find love is in a learning environment. The research shows that 58% of Northerners have found romance while at school, college, university or evening class. Nationally this trend appears to be on the increase, with 43% of those aged 65 and over admitting to having found love in their former school days, compared to 70% of today’s 18-24 year olds.

Psychologist Dr Linda Papadopolous, said: “Learning new skills and bettering ourselves is a great way to build self confidence and it’s not surprising to find that people commonly find love and are more receptive to romance when in learning environments.”

The LSC provide the examples of Prince William, who met his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton whilst they were both studying at the University of St Andrews; and football star Michael Owen, who met his wife Louise Bonsall at primary school in 1984 and have since had a family together.

Chris Roberts, Regional Director, LSC North East, said: “This study shows that the opportunity to learn new skills and gain qualifications can open other doors in people’s lives including meeting their future partners whether it be at school, college, or at university or evening classes.”
