Berghaus gets bigger in Japan
North East outdoor clothing company Berghaus has signed a five year deal that will see the brand extend its reach in Japan. Arugo Active will trade in the market as Berghaus Japan, introducing products into retail from the autumn.
Sunderland based Berghaus first launched into Japan in September 2007 through Japanese retailer Marui, which helped establish the brand in the previously untried market. The new contract was signed and sealed at the British Ambassador’s residence in Tokyo. Berghaus Japan aims to increase the number of retailers listing the brand to 100 during 2008 and to 180 by the end of 2009.
Richard Cotter, Berghaus brand president, said: “This deal is Berghaus’ second step in fulfilling our ambitions in the Japanese market. Through Marui, we have enjoyed a successful first season and the brand is now established in Japan. “Already in 2008, we have signed up a new partner for Poland and seen the opening of more Berghaus stores in Korea. Now this partnership with Arugo Active is also going to play a key role in the delivery of our global strategy to become one of the world’s top five outdoor brands.”
Jong Lee, Chairman of Arugo Active, said: “Berghaus is a very special brand with a rich history that is second to none. We believe that the brand and what it stands for will resonate well in a Japanese market that has been waiting for something fresh, innovative and of the highest standards for some time. “We have already hit the ground running with an outstanding and motivated team led by one of Japan’s most respected leaders and pioneers in the active outdoor industry and look forward to a positive and memorable 2008.”
