Young enterprise urges employers to give up 'one day'
Giant letters spelling the words ‘One Day’ took over the streets of Newcastle yesterday as Young Enterprise North East (YENE) launched a new appeal urging employers across the region to give up One Day of their resources to help inspire young people in the North East. The One Day call to action will be targeted at business owners to encourage them to give up either one day of their time, staff, expertise or profits to help support our future economy and create the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Children from West Denton Primary School and Westgate Community College took the 10ft high letters spelling out ‘One Day’ to the streets. Representatives from businesses who have already signed up to the campaign were also there to pledge their support including architecture firm _space, Sage, Wellstream, Accenture, and One North East.
The One Day campaign asks employers the question ‘what could you give up in one day?’, and outlines 10 pledges to pick from, such as giving up one day’s profit, one day of an employee’s time to volunteer in a school, or one day for a student to visit their workplace. The charity has set the target of aiming to sign up one business every working day throughout the 18-month campaign.
YENE chief executive Catherine Marchant said: “Being the longest standing enterprise education provider in the region, we are very proud of what YENE has achieved, but we all need to step up a gear if we are to meet the aims of the Regional Economic Strategy in terms of future enterprise activity.
“This campaign is simple and direct, any business small or large can be involved, as they can pick and choose their level of commitment depending on their size. One Day pledges are so flexible they can be implemented into daily business life and can even form a very practical part of your corporate social responsibility strategies or career development plans.” To sign up to the YENE One Day pledge or for more information visit www.onedaycampaign.org for more details.
