Make up makes pots of money
Britons spend more on health and beauty products than consumers in any other country in the EU. The UK spends £295 per person each year, compared with £257 in France, £240 in Italy and £227 in Germany, said the European Health and Beauty Retailers report.
The people of the Netherlands are more careful, spending a mere £220 per person while the Spaniards - the least vain - still manage to clock up £200 a year.
The high level of UK spending is due to the availability of a wide range of products, together with constant enthusiasm for new and pricy products, the study by Verdict Research found.
Report co-author Carol Ratcliffe said: “The British are the biggest spenders in the EU. The average UK consumer spends 375 euro a year on health and beauty products, far more than most of our European neighbours. “We spend almost 50% more each year than the Spanish for example, and 43% more than the average European. The British are certainly happy to splash out on looking good.”
The UK’s spending combined with its large population makes it the second biggest market for health and beauty products behind Germany, the report said.
