North East England named best tourism body
North East England has recently been named the Best Tourism Body in the UK. The North East’s tourism board was given the award at the Group Leisure Awards held in Birmingham last Wednesday.
The win comes just after the news that the North East has seen a 30% rise in tourism income over the past five years.
The Group Leisure Awards are voted for by readers of Group Leisure Magazine and groupleisure.com. North East England is the inaugural winner of the category which was introduced to recognise the hard work of organisations throughout the UK.
Geoff Hodgson, Chairman of the North East Tourism Advisory board, said: “This is a fantastic accolade for the region, especially as it has been voted for by industry professionals. And to be the first tourism organisation to receive the award is a real honour.
“Group travel is a significant market area for North East England and we have a huge amount to offer visiting groups.”
According to North East England, the groups market contributes £13.2million into the regional economy. Later this year the region will be hosting two roadshows in the south of England to allow group travel organisers from around the UK to meet with attractions and accommodations providers from the North East.
Rob Yandell, managing editor and publisher for Group Leisure said: “North East England has been immensely proactive in its approach to the groups market and has clearly struck a chord with the readers. It’s a wonderful area of the country and with the assistance of the tourism body, group travel organisers and their members can look forward to fantastic days out and imaginative short breaks. Congratulations on scooping this prestigious award.”
