160 jobs at risk in Newton Aycliffe
A glass factory employing 160 workers may close, it has been announced. Flat glass manufacturer Schott is reviewing various options for its site at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, including possible closure.
“One of the options under consideration is the possible closure of the site,” a spokesman said.
The firm, which makes glass oven doors and control panels, says it has been badly hit by the closure of domestic appliance manufacturers in the UK.
In a statement, it said: “Despite significant cost cutting measures over the past 18 months including numerous job reductions, the home appliance business in Newton Aycliffe has been generating large losses over recent months.
“Accordingly Schott is reviewing options for the Newton Aycliffe site going forward. One of the options under consideration is the possible closure of the site.
“Schott has not made any decisions and the company has today announced the commencement of consultations with the employees at the site and their representatives.
“These consultations are being undertaken with a view to seeking to identify alternative options. No decisions will be taken until the company has concluded full consultations with the appropriate representatives.”
A spokesman for Schott said: “In the current economic climate, we need to identify ways to maintain and increase the long term profitability of the Schott Flat Glass Business Unit and at the same time continue to service our customers.”
