Theatre royal launches new youth festival
This month the Theatre Royal in Newcastle is launching a new dramatic arts festival for the young people of the North East.
The TRY (Theatre Royal Youth) Performance Festival, which concludes on Sat 1 August, is aimed at promoting the personal and social benefits of involvement in drama, theatrical expression stage craft and learning new skills.
The festival is designed for individuals as well as groups, and is delivered by some of the top theatre professionals in the UK, Italy and Germany. Participants will be able to try their hand at a range of different skills including comedy improvisation, stage combat, physical approaches to acting, and puppetry.
The festival has also attracted the interest of the international community, and groups from Italy and Germany will be flying in to take part in the event.
Teresa Threadgall, Head of Learning at the Theatre Royal, said: “We are very excited to launch ‘TRY’ for the first time, and to be able to welcome international groups to participate. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how the festival will create a platform for the development and sharing of new ideas and skills, help break-down cultural and language barriers and may even spark-off pan-European collaborations for the future.”
Although the main focus is on the benefits of participation, all those involved will be able to perform their own pieces to the rest of the group throughout the week, and together create a public performance for the final night.
The Festival is open to anyone between the ages of 16 – 25yrs, and culminates in an aftershow party on Saturday 1 August.
